A Year of SMART Growth and Global Engagement As 2025 draws to a close
Light Structures is reflecting on a year defined by momentum, innovation and the always growing demand for structural health monitoring solutions.
From a strong pipeline of new installations to deeper collaboration across global markets, we’ve continued to support smarter, safer and more efficient maritime operations with our SENSFIB™ technology.
This year, the shift towards data-driven decision-making in vessel and offshore structure management was clear. Our team has worked closely with clients in commercial shipping, defence and offshore energy, delivering structural monitoring systems that are not only technically robust but aligned with the evolving needs of digital fleets.
SMART Structural Health Monitoring Gains Industry Ground
The most significant development in 2025 was the recognition of our SMART systems as a key enabler for next-generation ship design and operation. The American Bureau of Shipping granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to our concept for integrated hull monitoring in newbuilds. This marked a major milestone for the industry and a validation of our approach to class-driven structural insight.
This concept supports the use of real-world data in structural design and condition-based operation. By integrating hull monitoring at the design stage, shipyards and owners can achieve more efficient steel usage, meet safety standards with greater confidence, and ultimately extend asset life. The move by ABS signals a wider industry shift, signalling that structural health monitoring is becoming a strategic tool for long-term operational efficiency and digital compliance.
Our approach to SMART structural health monitoring with SENSFIB is grounded in the need to reduce maintenance costs and even the amount of drydockings a vessel may have to undergo during its lifetime. We deploy tailored sensor layouts to capture meaningful structural data, providing operational dashboards for clear insight, and enabling data integration with AI tools and digital twin platforms. The aim is to deliver structural monitoring that supports practical decision-making and long-term asset performance.
Structural health monitoring around the world
In August, we announced a new partnership with the Pulse Technology Hub in Australia. This collaboration strengthens our presence in the Asia-Pacific region and gives customers in Australia and New Zealand direct access to local support and expertise. Pulse brings both industry experience and a strong regional footprint, ensuring Light Structures can respond quickly and effectively to the needs of defence clients, commercial operators and shipyards in the region.
Throughout 2025, our team was active across the globe. At Kormarine in Busan, we presented the role of SENSFIB in shaping the future of SMART vessel operations. We also took part in the Saudi Maritime & Logistics Congress, where interest in structural health monitoring continues to grow.
In South Korea, our board met with our partners at GME to align future strategies. CEO Niklas Hallgren also travelled to Singapore and Saudi Arabia for direct meetings with customers and partners. These in-person conversations have been essential to understanding regional needs and ensuring our solutions remain practical and impactful.
Closer to home, we were proud to return to Nor-Shipping 2025 in Oslo. The event gave us the chance to showcase the maturity of our SENSFIB profile while also highlighting the new digital aspects we are focusing on to an audience including some of the most technology savvy shipowners, operators and builders in the world.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Light Structures is well positioned for continued growth in 2026. The industry’s interest in long-term structural insight is increasing. Operators want trusted data to support digital maintenance strategies, reduce unnecessary reinforcement, and improve safety.
We are committed to advancing our technology and delivering scalable, intuitive SHM systems that make structural data useful from day one. Whether through early integration on newbuilds or retrofit installations for ageing assets, our goal remains to empower better decisions through reliable structural insight.
To all our clients, collaborators and supporters, thank you for being part of this year’s journey. We look forward to working with you in 2026.
